Hand 1 Solution You are off two trump tricks, you have already lost the AD and it looks very much like West has the Q. Clearly you should rise with the KD. Only someone with a strong death wish would play low. Having won the KD, you should cash the AS ( I will tell you why in a moment) and then play 3 rounds of clubs discarding your losing diamond. With the lead in dummy, ruff dummy's last diamond, stripping the suit and exit a spade. If West has to win this trick (he does) you will not need to take the Heartt finesse West will either have to lead a H or give you a ruff and sluff. If the opponants can untangle their spades cash 2 spades and get out safely on winning your spade exit, you can still fall back on the heart finess. Tip: Finesses seldom work in problem hands-in mine they never work! And why you cash the AS early? Well if west was born with Kx and didnt have the presence of mind to unblock the K. he could be thrown in later in the hand.As it was with KJ doublton he couldnt avoid it. Hand2 Solution Better discard a club at trick 2 a sure loser anyway. You have to guard against a 4-1 spade break (likely on the bidding) If you ruff and find Spades 4-1 you have to desist playng spades after 2 rounds and go after hearts. If the player with 4S has doblton H, clever opponants will organis a Heart ruff to defeat you. If you discard a club at trick2 avoiding the long hand force, you will be able to draw 4 rounds of trumps before attacking hearts. Defencive Soution When declaror has an apparantly solid t4rump suit and the dummy has a threatening side suit, the defenders must take their tricks QUICKLY. In other words an active rather than a passive defence is called for. On this active means winning the opening lead and shifting specifically to the QH. You need 3 fast H tricks and in order to get them you need pd to have AJ10 hearts. If you play a low H and dec. has the 9, he can duck the trick to psds hand. Your thoughtful switch should be rewarded.
