transfer then bid 4H. If partner has a good hand he will bid on since he knows you have slam interest.
(If you did not have slam interest you would use texas transfer i.e. 4D)

I'm with Harold on this one.
If you haven't heard of texas transfers Phil, they are very simple and worth playing. They apply over 1NT too, so 1NT-4D would be a transfer to 4H with no slam interest, while 1NT-2D-2H-4H would show slam interest and partner could bid on if he has interest.
Discuss them with Fraser if you haven't already.
Out of interest, what was partner's hand?

Partner's hand was something along the lines of....
Axx AKx AJxx Axx
Myles or Gyles can correct me if that's wrong.
Just out of interest, could you not reverse the Texas transfer so that 1NT-4D is transfer with slam interest?

You could Phil, but as far as I am aware that is not very standard. Normally, the weaker you are, the quicker and higher you bid and hence 4D would be weaker than 2D then bidding 4H.
I guess the advantage of using 4D as the slam try is that both of you are less likely to forget its a slam try than an auction where you transfer then jump to 4M.
Maybe Catherine/Liz know of a better reason why you shouldn't play it that way though.

One very interesting feature about texas transfers that NEEDS to be agreed if you decide to play them is what the two ways of bidding 4NT mean:
