Hello all,
My brain has been switched off for over a month now so i will take a go to try and jump start it back into life...
Win AS, cash 5 diamond tricks, cash QH then AH and KH. If hearts don't behave I think the sensible option is to take the spade finesse unless left hand opponent's carding was odd (you should really give the spade pips on trick 1 Phil).
That seems pretty straight forward so I am guessing you are supposed to assume he has led xS from 5 small and you have to drop the doubleton Q or something daft like that?

This could well be wronf by err...by spade finesse is that the queen if so does that not make 12 tricks

Yeah Myles, you are right. I was thinking about it on the tram last night (how !) nd came to the conclusion that Phil wants us to run the spade around to your 8 and then take the finesse again for 4 spade tricks as that is the only line that works if the hearts do not behave (which I assume they don't)
For that to be a proper problem though, he needed to tell us the actual spade lead for us to be able to solve it properly (eg he has led the 7S from 4th best therefore he must have started with QT97(x).

OK, here's the answer, a nice double squeeze most easily explained trick by trick.
Trick 1: Take the spade finnesse straight away
I apologise for the lead being inaccurate but it was an obvious small from an honour.
Trick 2: Now we get thinking... What if hearts don't split? Answer: Double squeeze, with one hand having 4 or 5 spades and the other 4 hearts. Start to run your diamonds (small to the ace)
Tricks 3-6 Play out the rest of the diamonds, watch as opponents follow/discard.
Notice this still leaves a 13th trick if hearts do split. Already RHO has been squeezed.
Tricks 9-11: Play out 3 rounds of hearts, discovering they don't split and squeezing the LHO to come down to either 1-1 or 2-0 in clubs and spades. On trick 11 throw the opposite to what LHO throws
Trick 12: Play the QC to the Ace, watch as either the K and J fall making the 4 a winner or see RHO has thrown all his spades making the 6 a winner.
Trick 13: Play the last wee card from you hand, 13 tricks
