Fair enough then. Is that whats happening then?

That sounds great. I have sent a text to Andy who said he will probably able to play and I will post as soon as I get the answer. I havent told him about the camping part yet, but if he has any objections he can stay in Edinburgh!

I dont know if camping is a good idea, especially if Andy isn't there, cos we need a car!

What we all doing?

Reformed Englishman- 06-26-2006
Andy says he can play, so thats us all. He also says he thinks the tent idea is "barmy" and he will stay in his place in Edinburgh. I am still up for the tent idea though if everyone else is.

I can indeed play and I do think the tent idea is barmy. Amusing though.

As has already been stated, it's nice and easy for me to stay in my flat for Peebles and travel from there. Hence, for me at lest, I see no need for a tent. I appreciate this is not the case for everyone though. Also, in my humble opinion, I can't see it being used anywhere apart from at Peebles. (I expect to be shouted down for this)

Also, in the (massively unlikely) event that the SBU decided to fund the buying of a tent, it would not be exculsively for our use. We would have to offer its use to other people, say new juniors etc.

Plus, I don't want to be the person who goes to the SBU and asks for money for a tent! I just can't see them accepting it, even if you do prove it's economically viable. It's not as if they pay our hotel fees at the moment! If we want a tent, we should be buying it ourselves. They wouldn't buy anyone else a tent to allow them to play in more tournaments!

Also, there's no way my car could take a tent and any more than 3 people, it's only wee! Also, I'm not sure how desperate I would be to have everyone coming from some mucky campsite into my lovely leather interiored car. Also, I'm not sure how keen everyone would be to leave several hundreds/thousands of pounds of kilts in the tent/in a car. That would be an extremely valuable steal for someone.

Anyways, while a jovial idea, it's not for me. However, I don't see why that should stop your plan and if you still want to get a tent for going to tournaments, go for it! I'm perfectly happy for everyone to stay in a tent (just as long as I am sleeping in my flat/a nice wamr hotel room!).

Feel free to criticise any of my points, they are just opinions.

ps Five years ago I would have been well up for this, I think I'm just getting old. At the end of the day I'd be perfectly happy to sit in a comfortable chair with a mug of hot chocolate and a warm pair of slippers on. Mmmmm......
pps As I will be working hard next year as an actuary, going away to stay in a tent for my two days off in the week doesn't sound particularly enticing.

lol - what a bizarre discussion for a bridge website.

Ah - Andy you've crossed over to the darkside. Welcome aboard! biggrin.gif

Would love to be a fly on the wall at the SBU finance committee meeting as they debated the merits of funding a tent. I imagine the motion being passed unanimously and then the discussion turning to how to convince the Camrose and Lady Milne teams that sharing this communal tent will be a bonding exercise and improve performance.

I just wanted to say that Myles is right that camping doesn't mean slumming it these days - there are many nice camp sites out there and if you buy the right tent it can be very comfy. There are obvious cost savings too for those on a budget.

That being said, Andy raises a valid point about the security of your stuff and, unfortunately, I doubt the SBU will have the 'vision' to buy you a tent.
