Just wondering if anyone was doing/planning anything for the SBU Summer congress from 14-16th july?
minimightymonkey- 06-17-2006
I can go but my family also want to go to Hong-Kong then. If we could play as a team that would be cool and i could come. What i'll do depends on what Phil wants.

So whats happening to us for this then? I am definitely in if everyone else is, but would like it cleared up if not.

I have a slightly outrageous idea and Myles was thinking along the same lines... (that's how outrageous it is)
How about we try and get the SBU to use some junior funds to buy a big tent (6 or 8 - person).
Advantages -
All we'd need to do is pay the relatively small fee for a campsite pitch instead of B&Bs etc.
It'd be great fun, we could bring BBQs or whatever
Really get that team spirit going
It'd work wherever there's a tournament we want to be in
Disadvantages -
SBU might not help us buy one
You'd have to walk for a shower
Someone would probably need a car there
Places might not have campsites nearby
Now as I see it, one of the main objections to us playing in real events was the money issue - this goes a reasonable way to solving this! Peebles in particular has a couple of campsites nearby.
Is this a stupid idea? Would people be willing to do it?
Myles- 06-20-2006
me camping love
it is rather sexist to assume that there will be no girls in the coming couple of years but...they could come too. Although girls camping is never good
Once i get a job , and come on it's going to happen , i'll have a car. Just at £70 a week+ to own one let alone travelling around the uk i cant get it till i sort income.
I'm going to be playing in the summer congress with Gyles.
Anyone get the Scotsman? And got last Monday's copy?
Phil- 06-20-2006
But most of these tents have 2 compartments now - one for boys and one for girls if necessary!
Anyone else even read this?
Reformed Englishman- 06-20-2006
Of course I am reading this, I am supposed to be revising for an exam tomorow. The one major, maybe minor, drawback, in fact it is defintely major actually, is this: no one has a car, can drive a car, can afford a car even if they could drive a car, could afford the insurance even if they could drive a car and afford a car and there really should be an and because the last few arent really enough.
It does however sound fun and that is more important than the rest. Will anyone be able to get to peebles with a massive tent? or be able to drive a car before the 14th july?
Reformed Englishman- 06-20-2006
Wait a minute..........
ANDREW HAS A CAR!! What a revelation, it is a bit dinky and it would be remarkably hilarious to see how well it would drive with six people (including the giants that are Myles and Gyles) and a massive tent, plus the luggage of the aforementioned people. But Hilarious + Fun of Weekend = great.
Further drawbacks are - I can imagine disagreement in our objectives from some important places:
1) The sbu would probably not like what is likely to end up as a junior piss-up in Peebles (and you know the first person to get up in the morning would probably find the nearest hose) and several other places at their expense. 2) I can imagine Andy will not be happy taking everyone in his, although dinky, incredibly attached to, car. 3) Again there should be a three but I just cant think of one.

It does however sound like a...
MINI ADVENTURE

Reformed Englishman- 06-21-2006
Wo, wo, wo Myles. The congress is in Glenrothes NOT, and i believe this is an important point, Gleneagles!!! But it will be good to see nevertheless. If you tell me when your train is I can give you a lift. I will also ring the organiser tonight and try and pull some strings so we can be in the same team in the evening.
Brilliant news about the car by the way. If Andy goes along with this, that would make transport easy!! Camping here we come (if the sbu agrees).
Reformed Englishman- 06-21-2006
I also should probably add that I have an exam in two hours time and I have just spent £163 on Amazon, I am still posting on the forum and I am also doing my laundry. It will be ok though.
Phil- 06-21-2006
I would also like to add Alex that there is an edit button for such extras....
minimightymonkey- 06-22-2006
I was just about to call Peter Cohen about the congress but then it occured to me, i didnt know if Andy and Alex were teaming with us. I know you are playing Alex, i assume this measn with andy. When I call Peter should I be entering a team?

On the subject of a tent i dont think it is a good idea really. Firstly Its a lot of effort to get it there. Secondly i'm fond of warm showers in the morning and im sure the people we play would be fond of us having showers in the morning too. Thirdly I cant imaging trucking a tent to an event outside the country and living there for a week or whatever just dosent sound like fun so will only realy work for events in the UK. Fourthly even events in the UK wont allyways make tent usage easy. For example the English Pairs in the Middle of London, that hotbed of camping activity.
In my mind this makes it suitable for short events held in the UK outside an hour or 2's drive from anyones house outside a heavily built up area. Im not sure how many of them there are.

Hey hey Mr Fwaza! U do like a hot shower don't you! And so you should, i've got this power shower at home and its lush, it makes me feel so clean an happy!!
But what would u say if i managed to nullify your points, would if these four disadvantages were removed would u then say?
1) Effort in getting a tent there I'm sure you know that they fold up nice and neat and a full 7 (http://www.waudbys.co.uk/products/details/2253.html) man tent folds up to these dimensions, Bagged size: 65 x 47 x 13cm , this is smaller than a standard kit bag and can easily fit in a boot or on a chair in a car. It weighs 16.8 kg which is perhaps a tad heavy for carrying up a mountain the maximum distance we'd be moving it would be about 20metres, an easy obstacle to overcome.
2) Warm Showers, You really dont know much about camping, we *could* have a cold dip in the Tweed to stay fresh (by God it would be frozen but both of Peebles campsites haev lots of warm showers! easy! (i phoned and checked!)
3) No, i agree it wont be taken to Slovakia and it is only for weekend jobs But then we only play in the uk mainly
4) While yes London centre isn't the camping magnet of the Scottish highlands, the whole area around london is full of campsites as London is a huge tourist place. Staying in a cheap hotel in london cost 210 for 3nights for 2 ppl, a massive expense, staying in a campsite and getting a tube in would reduce costs considerably (although there are hostels nearby)
Since there are most competitions in Peebles we will concentrate on Peebles, really only Edinburgh can accomodate ppl for Peebles and there is currently only one junior in Edin and I cant see him haivng 5 ppl stay over for a weekend and no more juniors in the forseable future, leeching off friends that arent playing the bridge wont work as we will not have time to see them and secondly this all involves transport to and from edin each day, most other events are near enough glasgow to use there. But if we goto peebles several times a year it will make it more worthwhile, e.g. prices: £20+ B&B ppn, fri&sat = £240 camping two sites in Peebles one £7.50ppn fri,sat = £45 other £13 per tent pn = £26 A monumental saving, as accomodation is the main cost and cost is the main worry this seems sensibel
