you hold:

ANd the bidding proceeds (Starting with your partner)
2H (3D) ? Now what action do you take (scoring is matchpoints & the two hearts bid s weak (but partner is disiplined will be 6 card suit and 6-10 points)

Gee guys im not really seeing a consensus here..........you want to add some explanation maybe?

Ok.

I voted for pass. There could be a game on, but I've got no way to reach it sensibly. Doubling with a stiff trump at the 3 level doesn't seem right, although it certainly could be (as it is matchpoints), particularly if the opponents are vul.

Who knows, maybe the opponents will keep on bidding rolleyes.gif

Doubling seems obvious if it is t/o. The worst that can happen is you partner will rebid a good suit. If this is doubled then either 3n or xx would be an escape to tell partner he must choose something else. You are far too strong not to compete at this level even if there is a misfit and bidding either suit naturally would be insane.

Pretty much my thoughts exactly, even your singleton heart is a pretty good one.

I would love to double for takeout, however it is completely standard and greatly preferable for it to be penalties rolleyes.gif

After all, when was the last time you wanted to make a takeout double on this auction? You need to have a stiff heart, or you would raise; you need to have short diamonds; you need to not have a suit that you want to bid, so basically 5 spades and 5+clubs. I think this is the first time that I've ever wanted to double for takeout on this auction.

The exception to the rule "when partner has preempted, double is penalties" is when partner's preempt is ambiguous, e.g. a multi or a dutch 2. If you now double a suit that opener may or may not have, I prefer to play double as takeout ("pass or correct"). Even here, some prefer double to be penalties.

I agree with micky thaqt a x here is penalties, but i think that this hand could be massive with the right support, i think at matchpoints its correct to bid clubs as partner wouldnt bid 2h with 4 spades, or shouldnt anyway, and there is a good chance that he has at least 3 clubs, 6h and possible a spade shortage, and if he doesnt have a spade shortage then 5diamonds almost certiany on as that would be a bid fit missing only 2 aces? I dont know exactly what the probabilities are, but i think must be about a 1/3 chance of 3 clubs, and that is pretty much all you need? even 3613 would be reasonable? for 4 clubs, as there is a good chance they would be making 5 diamonds? Would the vulerablility affect the position? in fact partner was 1633 but he was a beginner and the auction went
2h 3d 4c 4d
p p 4s x
p p p
He was well confused after 4s and decided to pass sad.gif but i think 5 clubs was off one as the cards lay. losing 1 club 1 diamond 1 heart.

4sx went for 1700 though.........
